School Snack Partners

The Fresh Snack Program provides snacks for five elementary schools within the Ithaca City School District. Fresh classrooms snacks have been served at Beverly J. Martin Elementary (BJM) since 2008, and they are now also served twice per week to Enfield Elementary (2014), Belle Sherman Elementary (2015), Caroline Elementary (2016), and Cayuga Heights Elementary (2017), Northeast Elementary (2019).

The schools we work with are truly our partners, and we could not operate the program in these communities without their constant participation and support.  There are countless ways in which school staff and administrators help to make this program happen. Principals help send messages about snack to the school community, share Fresh Bites with teachers and on morning announcements, and encourage best practices among staff. Classroom Teachers and Aides arrange for snack pick up from the cafeteria, portion snack out for students, serve snack in a positive manner, share Fresh Bites and other educational tools, clean up and return bowls, and offer us regular feedback.  Students help with any number of these tasks as well as try new foods.  Custodians and after-school staff help with additional cleanup and use of leftovers, the administrative assistants help us with communications and outreach, the school nurses help us manage allergy issues, and we even have collaborated with Librarians, Music and Art Teachers on school day education. Parents and caregivers also provide time and financial support to help keep us running smoothly.

Cafeteria staff are also instrumental in serving snack, offering feedback, managing supplies, and clean up.

We are so grateful for the daily efforts that our partnering school communities offer to help our healthy snacks keep flowing.
