Field TripsSchool classrooms visit the farm in spring, winter & fall for curriculum-integrated, hands on fun with growing food for their communities.
We work with the Ithaca Public Education Initiative's Discover the Trail Program to offer these as cost free Buddy Up trips to elementary school classrooms. |
School FoodAmong our other markets, the farm grows vegetables for meals and snacks in Ithaca City Schools, including all of ICSD, New Roots Charter School and Lehman Alternative Community School, reaching over 3,000 students.
Summer youth employees process farm ingredients in the district's central kitchen for Summer Feeding Program meals, and preserve them for school year meals. The teens engage in discussion about economic and policy landscapes of school food in the U.S. |
Fresh SnacksThe Fresh Snack Program provides fresh, healthy, plant-based snacks and integrated education to all 2,094 students (Pre-K through 5th grades) in each of the elementary schools it serves in Ithaca City School District—Beverly J. Martin, Enfield, Belle Sherman, Caroline, and Cayuga Heights Elementary Schools.
FSP replaces less nutritious classroom snacks that teachers or parents otherwise pay for, increases access to fruits and vegetables, familiarizes students with healthier food choices, and connects youth with their local food system and local food choices. . |
With the start of the 2016-2017 school year, Crooked Carrot is now partnering with The Fresh Snack Program and Youth Farm Project to bring their expertise sourcing and processing fresh, locally-grown produce to our elementary classroom snacks. http://www.crookedcarrotcsk.com/
